Watoga State Park with its dark skies and cabin or camping accommodations is a great East Coast destination for clubs and amateur astronomers looking for a convenient observing location.
Two locations in the park provide mowed fields to set up your instruments.
The first is located on the Dam at Watoga Lake and the second at the Ann Bailey Trail Overlook. Both sites have expansive sky vistas for astro-photography or visual observing and provide great locations to observe meteor showers.
An additional viewing spot outside the park is the tower at Droop Mountain Battlefield.
To make arrangements to use these sites please contact the Park Office at (304) 799-4087.
Watoga State Park was declared an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association on 18 Oct 2021 and has modified limited lighting at the park to meet these standards. Its location away from urban sprawl and light pollution make it a great destination for amateurs of all skill levels.
